In late May, we took a family trip to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Along the way we stopped at Martin's Cove. We were able to learn a bit more about the pioneers, the Sun Ranch and even pull handcarts.
Riley even pulled his own handcart.
That night we went to Mount Rushmore and watched the nightly lighting ceremony. When we planned the trip, we didn't think that there would be much to do at a rock with faces on it, that it would just be something to see and go. But we were wrong. Just being there gave you a sense of patriotism and what great things this country has done and how great our freedom is. We can't wait to go back and spend at least the whole day. The lighting ceremony is awesome and the Black Hills are just beautiful.
After spending 2 nights in Rapid City, SD we started on our way home. Along the way, we made a tiny detour and went out to see Devils Tower in northeastern Wyoming. We made the little hike around the base and from time to time we could see rock climbers making their way to the top. We decided to take the easy route and go up on the trail.
Once we were home, we took a quick day trip to the sand dunes where Riley really surprised us by riding a 4wheeler by himself. And when he started he never wanted to stop and rode well into the night. Hooray for Riley!!
